Ballroom

“Ballroom” is an inclusive wheelchair ballroom dance movie about a struggling dancer, Violet, who needs the help of the charming ballroom dance instructor, Ford to learn all the Latin dances in two weeks for an upcoming crucial audition. When Violet’s depressive mother, Janet, causes her to have a devastating car accident and become paraplegic, Ford helps Violet regain her love for life by showing her she can still dance and audition — in a wheelchair. However, Violet’s controlling mother and Ford’s jealous business partner, (a fiery, Russian three-time dance champion), Irina, will stop at nothing to prevent Violet from realizing her dreams.

An NYC tween, self-assured of her transgender identity and spunky as hell, is on the cusp of puberty. She must convince her divorced parents — a recovering alcoholic father and overbearing mom — that she needs hormone blockers to stop from developing into a boy, but their self-centeredness and lack of understanding make this a difficult path.

About Acer

Laurence Walsh – Director

With over twenty years experience as a writer and producer, Laurence Walsh, has staffed onnetwork hits such as CSI:Miami, NCIS, and on critically acclaimed shows such as the Dresden Files and Against the Wall. In addition to selling two original shows, she has also sold eight features and had two produced. As a consultant, Laurence has helped writers develop their scripts, staff on television shows and meet agents, managers and producers.

At the same time, Laurence got her Masters in Spiritual Psychology and became certified in several healing modalities including Kundalini Yoga, Breathwork and Family Constellation. Dedicated to her own healing and helping others, Laurence wrote the book “The Joy Experiment” about her process overcoming suicidal depression as a teenager and finding self-worth and happiness as an adult.

Now Laurence wants to to use the powerful mediums of film and television to tell stories about overcoming hardship, to give those who feel excluded a voice and to help a wider audience learn how to heal themselves and their communities.

Sybil Azur – Secretary

Sybil Azur is a Black/biracial writer, filmmaker, and community organizer focused on expanding the influence of underrepresented communities. A former actress and professional dancer, she is known for co-producing/co-directing the documentary PUSHING MOTHERHOOD. She holds a B.A. in African-American Studies and International Development Studies from UCLA, as well as a Screenwriting M.F.A. from Cal State University Northridge. 

Sybil was a 2021 Comedy Writing Fellow with the TV Academy Foundation. Currently she is the researcher for the ABC show Station 19. She is the 2022 recipient of the Climate Reality Project’s Green Ring Award and serves on the Board of Directors of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives.

Sybil’s mandate as a mother and human being is to leave the world better than she found it. The work she does is centers around caring for the planet as well as creating community in her neighborhood.

Jennifer Prediger – Treasurer

Jennifer Prediger is a writer/director and producer. APARTMENT TROUBLES, a comedy-drama starring Megan Mullally, Will Forte and Jeffrey Tambor, was her feature directorial and screenwriting debut alongside collaborator Jess Weixler, which played in theaters and on Showtime. She produced the dark comedy SONG OF BACK AND NECK starring Paul Lieberstein (The Office), Rose-Marie DeWitt and Paul Feig.

As an actor, Jennifer starred in UNCLE KENT, a film directed by Joe Swanberg that premiered at Sundance and was purchased by IFC. She co-starred in the Gotham Award-nominated comedy RED FLAG, in addition to Sundance favorites FIRST GIRL I LOVED and THE FOXY MERKINS.

Jennifer views storytelling as the greatest vehicle for empathy that we possess as a species. If you can see the world through other people’s eyes, they are no longer the “other”. As a person from an underrepresented group, Jennifer knows what it means to fight to tell her own stories. Cultivating the voices of those who have been underrepresented and misrepresented is a key priority for her as an educator, writer and producer.
